Waste Streams 101

Why streams matter

Permanent commercial service is not one pile at the dock. Most sites generate several waste streams, each with different handling, pricing, and diversion potential.

When streams are blurred together, you pay landfill rates for material that could have been recycled—and you lose the reporting that leadership uses for ESG and cost control.

The core streams

Municipal solid waste (trash)

Everyday non-recyclable refuse from offices, kitchens, restrooms, and retail floors. This is usually your highest-volume Permanent Services line and the baseline for price-per-yard (PPY) comparisons.

Single-stream recycling

Mixed paper, plastics, and cans collected together. Contamination (food, liquids, plastic bags) can trigger rejection fees or force material back to trash—quietly raising your true cost.

Cardboard / OCC

Corrugated cardboard is often the highest-value stream for warehouses, restaurants, and retailers. Loose cardboard in a mixed dumpster is money left on the dock; baled OCC can change the economics entirely.

Organics / food waste

Kitchens, cafeterias, and grocery produce significant organics. Where municipal or private organics programs exist, diversion cuts landfill tonnage and can reduce trash frequency.

Specialty & excluded waste

Batteries, oils, medical, construction debris, and hazardous materials usually sit outside a standard Permanent Services agreement. Putting them in the wrong container creates liability and extra charges.

A practical site walk

1. Walk the dock, alley, and corral—note every container and what actually goes in it.
2. Ask: which materials are mixed that should be separated?
3. Capture hauler name, container size, and pickups per week for each stream.
4. Photograph or upload a recent bill so charges map to real streams—not a single vague “service” line.
