How to Read a Commercial Trash Bill
Line items, surcharges, and frequency codes—what to capture before you compare pricing.
Bills hide the story in the line items
A commercial invoice is rarely a single “trash” number. Haulers itemize service, city fees, environmental charges, and extras. Reading it well is the difference between guessing and knowing your PPY.
Anatomy of a useful bill
Hauler & account
Logo, legal name, and account number tie the invoice to the service location—not just the billing PO box.
Service location
Confirm the dock address matches the site you are reviewing. Multi-site companies often reconcile the wrong yard.
Service period
Monthly vs. 28-day cycles change how you annualize cost. Note the period dates.
Recurring service lines
Look for commercial trash, recycling, or rental lines with a container size and frequency. Examples from real Midwest agreements:

Recurring fees (include these)
- Container admin / permit (common in Chicago)
- Environmental & regulatory percentage or flat fee
- Administrative or container service fees billed every cycle
Occasional charges (usually exclude from base PPY)
- Extra pickup / extra yardage
- Delivery or removal
- Contamination or overload
- Lock & cable add-ons (include only if they appear every bill)

Red flags worth escalating
- Auto-renewal language with a narrow cancellation window (often 90 days before term end)
- “Plus fees” totals that dwarf the base rate
- Service increases without a clear new frequency or container change
- Fuel or environmental fees that ratcheted up while container size stayed flat
